Presentation: Outwardly, Sokka is a fun, cheerful kind of guy. He presents a generally upbeat attitude and is the self-described “meat and sarcasm guy.” He comes off as a bit of a goofball because that’s really what he is. Constantly cracking jokes or making sarcastic remarks about the situations he and his friends find themselves in, he’s the go-to guy if you want a groan-inducing joke and his friends find themselves at a loss for such witticisms in his absence. He’s also foolish in his own way and a little impulsive, especially when it comes to his main vice, food. Sokka is a glutton and he's fortunate his lifestyle and exercise afford him the luxury of consuming whatever he desires without too much effect on his figure.

He’s also quite skeptical (some might say cynical) and carries a suspicion of outrageous claims such as future-predicting fortune tellers or local legends regarding spirits. He doubts that Aang is the Avatar, initially, and even scoffs at the idea of the Spirit World! Sokka is the kind of person who likes to have hard evidence before he believes something is true. This extends into a bit of suspicion regarding strange people, especially those who are from the Fire Nation.

Sokka is very down to earth. He prefers common sense and practical solutions to anything extravagant and tends to scoff at elaborate or fantastical ideas, especially if there doesn't seem to be a way for them to be carried out with the means at his disposal. He’s also a keenly intelligent young man, despite first impressions based on some of his rather impulsive actions and dumb jokes. He’s quite capable of conceptualizing airships utilizing heated gas and other interesting inventions that can be used with great effect. He has a mind for plans, and is in fact called upon to provide the plan for the invasion of the Fire Nation during the Day of Black Sun. At the same time, he thinks outside the box, and is praised for his quick thinking and novel techniques by his sword master, Piandao.

Despite his confidence in himself and his skills, when things don't go according to plan, he has a tendency to panic a little. Before, he might also fall into depression and insecurity, but having grown in his abilities he tends to bounce back much more quickly than he used to.

Motivations: Sokka is motivated primarily by love of his family and love of his tribe. These are two things that are central to his character and to how he interacts with the world. Despite his frustrations with her at times, Sokka adores his little sister and would do a lot for her, up to sacrificing his own life to save hers. She’s almost a surrogate mother to him, despite the fact that she’s younger. If his sister is threatened, expect an outburst of anger and at the very least he'll attempt to go after the one responsible. Likewise, he's come to see Aang almost as a younger brother and is very attached to and protective of the Avatar in a similar fashion.

Sokka is also motivated by his extended family, his tribe. As a member of the Southern Water Tribe, Sokka prides himself on his ability to hunt, fish, and fight. These are duties he takes on as a warrior and provider for his people and this defined his early identity when he was the only older boy left in his village. He has pride in himself and in his abilities and pride in his people, the Southern Water Tribe. This, along with his desire to protect and care for his sister, spurs him to accompany her when she leaves the South Pole to accompany Aang.

Sokka is also a genuinely good person. He believes in doing the right thing, especially by his family. While minor things like petty theft or taking clothes from a washing line for a Fire Nation disguise don't bother him, he balks at killing in cold blood, despite being in a war and understanding that bad things do happen in conflicts. He doesn't like bullies and finds undeserved arrogance aggravating. When confronted by the captive Princess Azula's taunting regarding his significant other's capture and imprisonment by the Fire Nation, Sokka is angered, but he restrains himself, refusing to hurt the captive princess, even to sate his own desire for a bit of petty revenge.

Prose: Sokka brushed his hands over the unfamiliar clothes he'd been given and took a breath, centering himself. He could almost hear Piandao talking to him. Control. Calm. Breathe. Sokka was familiar with death, even if he didn't like it. But he understood that these people were going to judge him and his ability, send him out to fight in their creepy, messed up death match. And if he wanted to survive, he would need to impress them.

The young man stepped out into the center of the floor in front of the panel of judges, gave them a respectful bow as if he were facing his master. Then smiled.

"So, I've been dying to meet you guys!" Had to be upbeat, even if he didn't quite feel it. Laughed at his own stupid joke. He looked over the rack of weaponry available to him, closed his hands around a spear, then hesitated and instead drew a sword from the rack. It didn't feel quite right, didn't fit in his hand the way his had. But it was a sword. He swept the blade upwards into a brief salute towards the judging table then slipped forward into a flurry of drills. Thrust, parry, riposte, advance. A sweep against the leg of an imaginary opponents. A rising slash against the air and then another flurry of sharp thrusts and he ended it, panting for breath from the rapid exertion.

"Annnd that concludes my presentation on 'How to stab someone.' Any questions?"

What is your character scored: Most likely a 7 or 8

Sokka is intelligent, possessing a keen and inquisitive mind. He is a natural planner and is capable of creating detailed and efficient plans of action. Further, he is skilled in the use of the spear, knife, boomerang and war club, all traditional weapons of his native Southern Water Tribe. Having grown up in a tribal society, he can also make these weapons, with the easiest being the spear or club, while it would probably take several days or even weeks or months to make a decent boomerang. He is also well onto his way to becoming a master swordsman, having picked up and begun his training with Master Piandao of the Fire Nation.

Further, Sokka also has excellent wilderness survival skills, having grown up hunting and fishing to supply his village with food, as well as some limited foraging experience which was expanded upon during his travels with the Avatar. This would not apply in a desert environment, but in forest, tundra, or even jungle he has a pretty good idea of what to look for when it comes to edible plants, animals, and so forth. He comes from a tribal society and is extremely fit and no doubt strong for a young man his age as he hunts, fishes, boats, and otherwise performs other acts of physical labor that need him in decent shape. Additionally, he has a knowledge of boats and other water craft as well as how to navigate via stars and the sun, though lacking familiar constellations, this skill is of little use until he familiarizes himself with the new night sky.

Besides all that, Sokka is a bright, cheerful young guy, likable and friendly once you get to know him. Plus, he has a good sense of humor.
